Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign

If you’re looking for a seamless, efficient way to achieve a greater smile, Invisalign can help. Dr. Guri S. Dhaliwal DMD has years of experiences in helping his patients achieve the smile they’ve always dreamed of. Learn more about some of our commonly asked Invisalign questions.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign allows patients to align their teeth in a more discreet way than traditional orthodontics. These virtually invisible, BPA-free, removable trays are custom made using 3-D print technology. They gradually and gently shift teeth into position and can remedy crossbites, overbites, underbites, overcrowding, and gaps. They are a popular option for adults who need teeth alignment but are worried about distractions associated with traditional braces.

Does Invisalign Work Just as Well as Traditional Braces?

Unlike traditional braces that attempt to move many teeth at once, Invisalign works through controlled, timed movements, allowing only certain teeth to move during each stage of the treatment plan. Also, because there are no metal brackets or wires, you will experience no irritation to your gums or mouth. Because of our virtual results capabilities, you will be able to view how your teeth will look before your treatment even begins—something not possible with traditional braces.

How Long Will I Have to Wear Invisalign?

After your initial consultation, we will determine a projected timeline for your treatment. Just like traditional braces, your treatment time will vary depending on the severity of your case. That being said, the average treatment lasts about 12 months. Also, you will typically receive a new set of aligners every two weeks. Each set will continue to move your teeth into alignment.

How Often Should I Wear My Aligners?

You should wear your aligners for 22+ hours a day, taking into account time spent on eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. This is the best approach to achieve fast results.

Will Invisalign Hurt?

Generally, Invisalign will not hurt. Some patients note a feeling of mild discomfort or pressure during the first few days of wearing a new Invisalign retainer. This sensation is a signal that the device is working and should go away after a few days.

What Can I Eat and Drink While Wearing Invisalign?

Thanks to removable nature of Invisalign aligners, you can eat and drink whatever you want during your course of treatment. We recommend removing your aligners before every meal or snack. Gum should also be avoided as it will stick to the aligners. However, because you can remove the devices, you will be able to enjoy many of the foods that have always frustrated traditional orthodontics wearers, such as hard nuts, candy, apples, as well as chewy foods like caramel.

Can I Smoke While Wearing Invisalign?

We discourage the use of tobacco products while wearing aligners because it is possible for them to become discolored or stained.

How Do I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?

You can brush and rinse your aligners in lukewarm water. Invisalign also carries an Invisalign Cleaning System that can clean the aligners much like cleaning tablets for dentures. Wearers should always brush their teeth before putting their aligners back on to eliminate any food particles that could get trapped between the teeth and the aligner.

I Already Had Braces, but My Teeth Have Shifted. Can Invisalign Fix This?

Many of our patients that come to us are adults who had traditional braces as a child but have since relapsed. Invisalign is a great way to close gaps and shift teeth in a way that leaves you able to live your professional life seamlessly.

Can Invisalign Work With Bridges and Crowns?

Because bridges firmly link two teeth to one another, they can sometimes be resistant to movement. Dr. Dhaliwal can determine if Invisalign can be used with your bridges during your consultation. However, dental crowns (caps) are not typically an impediment in the tooth moving process.

Will I Need to Wear a Retainer After I Finish My Treatment?

As with traditional braces, we suggest patients who have undergone any orthodontic treatment to use a retainer to prevent the teeth from returning to their original position. Dr. Dhaliwal will determine if you need upper or lower retainers or both.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

Every patient will be different. During your initial consultation, Dr. Dhaliwal will go over your x-rays, determine your course of treatment, and review your options. We offer several financing options through both Care Credit and Springstone. Also, our Guest Experience Coordinator can outline monthly payment plans as well as answer any questions you may have.
