Overcoming your fear of dentists can be imperative for your overall health and well-being. I work with my patients to make their time in my office as comfortable as possible, but a true dental phobia can manifest itself in overwhelming dread before visits, significant anxiety during every appointment, or complete avoidance of the dentist altogether. After years of treating my patients, I have learned coping techniques that I’m happy to share with you in the hopes of reducing your fear and making each visit to my office as relaxing and pleasant as possible.
When you think about dentists, does your mind focus solely on the loud noise of the tools or the claustrophobic feeling of being stuck in the chair while the work is being performed? Instead of consuming your thoughts with your physical environment, try learning how to distract yourself and focus on pleasant memories or utilize techniques like counting to yourself in different sequences. We also offer movies and noise cancelling headphones to make your visit more pleasant.
Another simple method of distraction is to concentrate on distracting yourself. You can also focus on the pleasant parts of your surroundings such as the music you’re listening too through our office’s noise canceling headphones, or the enjoyable massage you’re getting in our comfortable chairs.
It sounds simple, but just telling yourself to be strong can you prepare you mentally for any possible pain. When you have confidence in your ability to control your own behavior, motivation, or social environment, you may be better able to accomplish a specific task such as overcoming fear of dentists.
I’ve also seen patients have incredible results by their ability to remain optimistic even in the face of scary situations. If you repeatedly tell yourself that everything will turn out fine, you may find your anxiety to be greatly reduced.
If none of the above techniques are effective, we can always discuss using sedation dentistry. I offer several options from light sedation to complete sleep during your procedure.
